Follow-up to Sexual Assault

The story of the very non-consentual sexual activity happening across the street last week continues to be near the forefront of my mind. As a man, it's impossible for me to imagine what Leslie was thinking and feeling during that car ride.

I wish I could make all sex crimes just go away and never return. Unfortunately, they won't go away, they are a part of our world. Our world in which only 6% of all teenagers (and only 22% of adults) believe in an absolute moral truth, according to Barna. Our world in which pornography is readily available to anyone who so desires it. I could go on, but you get my drift.

It won't go away. The day after my post, my awesome sister-in-law, Meghyn, wrote:
On Thursday at around 7:30 I was driving from my place to my parents' house to show them my engagement pictures which had come in the mail that day. Before I am 2 minutes from my place I see this big shiny Escalade pull up by these two girls clad in Catholic School Uniforms (fyi that means they were 18- years old). As i drive by I look into the Escalade and see that the people in the car are roughly late 20's - early thirties. They were wearing Thug Uniforms so I think to myself "Better safe than sorry" and pull in front of them along the street. I yell for the two girls who are now being "ay'ed" at from the 2 miscreants in the Escalade behind me. They stare in my car and I start trying to make up a reason for them to talk to me and not the creepy vibe givers behind me. The guys yelled at me and peeled out. They can kiss my ass.
I decided those in charge at the convent should know what's going on in our 'hood. Plus, I still have concerns about all the middle-of-the-night traffic back there. I figured, if there was a rape on my property, I'd appreciate it if someone told me. I took The Tobe across the street and walked into the convent and told the girl at the front desk what had happened. She was horrified... her face went pale, like she was going to be afraid to walk to her car at the end of her shift. While my goal was not to frighten, I found her response to be quite understandable. She took my name and number and assured me that someone in charge would give me a call.

That was 10 days ago. It occured to me today that I never received a call. No big deal, I walked back to the convent this afternoon to see if I could get a face-to-face with someone. The same girl was at the desk, and she remembered me. She seemed disappointed as she told me that her boss pretty much blew her off as if a freaking rape on their property isn't a big deal. Maybe those in charge at Catholic institutions think sex crimes aren't a big deal. (Ok, that was a low blow, but it's what I walked away thinking...)

This isn't over. There is a ton of crap going on in this world around us (Meghyn's friend was a sexual assault victim at the WEBN fireworks last night), and if you and I don't step up and give our all to make changes for the good, who's going to? This isn't the world I want my son to grow up in. I'm not trying to scare anyone, just letting you all know that these are common occurances in our world, and we need to be aware.

I expect to get ahold of someone other than this girl at the desk and get some questions answered, one of which will be why the hell didn't you return my phone call? Then I'll ask about their very strange traffic patterns (I don't think there are any pimped out Cadillacs with 20" rims and booming stereo systems being driven by the nuns). Then I'll ask how I can be a better neighbor to them. I'll keep you informed, as I'm sure you're on the edge of your seat...

Love ya to death for trying but now you get a small taste of what Jeff deals with on a daily basis in his job. Unfortunately, many things are "blown" off and there is not much you can do about that. Everyone seems to have their own agenda these days. Often times even the police's hands are tied. Keep your eye out but remember your family is your priority - don't let strangers into your home - you never know what they could be setting you up for! Just keep that in mind.
