As I hinted at in a previous post, Robyn made her first eBay purchase about 2 weeks ago. The purchase was a the complete DVD set of her favorite TV show ever, "Mad About You". Today, after an unhealthy amount of anticipation from the wifey (think of how excited a little kid is for Christmas... then picture the same anticipatory insanity out of Robyn, every day calling me at work, dejected as the "mail guy" didn't bring her "anything fun"), finally the purchase arrived: 15 discs, every episode, from all 7 seasons. Hallelujah and such.
The problem is, it's all completely bootleg. All 15 discs are very clearly homemade. Discs 1 thru 5 of this collection are straight up copies of the released DVDs (seasons 1 and 2, which have been released on DVD), complete with FBI warnings. Discs 6 thru 15 (seasons 3 thru 7, which have not been released on DVD) are ripped from cable TV stations' syndicated re-runs. We figured we were purchasing this, not something Dude made on his laptop in his mom's basement.
Robyn left negative feedback, which really pissed the guy off. He's offering to reconcile, likely just to keep his perfect feedback record intact. (Robyn's negative feedback was his first.) We want to keep the DVDs, we just don't think he was very upfront about what he was selling us, and we wouldn't have paid what we paid if we had known they were burned copies. He says that we should have asked the right questions before purchasing, but I disagree... I think he should have been less deceiving about his product.
Any suggestions from all you savvy folks who have been purchasing things online much longer than we have?

Considering that what he sent you was ILLEGAL, I wouldn't lose sleep over dropping him negative feedback. And despite Robyn's attachment, I'd cut a deal, tell the guy to pay for postage for you to return the disks, get a full refund, then say you'll drop the negativity.
My good friend was awesome at Ebay but could spot losers like this guy a mile away. Since you've got him where you want him, I'd strongly suggest "no deal."
i'll second that motion. i've been an ebayer since 1998 and this kind of stuff happens frequently. there might be little "hints" about it not being kosher, but they make sure not to say outright that it's illegal. why? because ebay will take the listing down!

Jason and I have had this come up thru Half.com which is owned by ebay. IF dude won't cooperate you can go officially thru ebay and report him and they will make sure you're taken care of.
Being an employee of an eBay consignment shop, we run in to this sort of thing here and there, or hear stories. Long story short, ebay would never knowingly allow someone to sell bootlegs. You've basically (for lack of better words) got him by the balls with whatever you do. I'd demand money back plus postage for his bunk product in exchange for taking the negative feedback away and for NOT reporting him to ebay... b/c after it's all said and done, you can contact ebay and they will suspend him indefintely for selling illegal goods.
