- It would be unwise to trade away Votto AND Bailey (both of whom could be above-average or even better ML players) for Joe Blanton (who happened to have a 5.11 road ERA and a .304 BAA in 2007).
- Fogg's signing for $1m is significant in that, if he's absolutely terrible, he's very financially waiver-able. If the home 9 re-signed Kyle Lohse for $8m, he's in the rotation for better or for worse. The financial side of this deal leads me to believe that they'll cut him if it doesn't work.
- That being said, what leads anyone to believe this deal won't work? The dude had a 4.15 ERA away from Coors Field. Add a half run to that (the GABP factor) and I'll gladly take a vet who'll provide 25+ starts at an ERA around 4.65.
- Assuming no deal for Blanton, do you see a better solution than Fogg? Would you rather spend some bucks on Lohse? Would you rather go into the year banking on three unproven starters? (Belisle is not proven.) As several local beat writers have said, the Reds' rotation is Harang, Arroyo, then pray for rain. At the very least, Fogg is insurance for Bailey-Volquez-Cueto-Maloney.
Of course, someone much smarter than I posted a better version of what I wanted to say over at C Trent's space. So, if you're at all interested in what I'm saying, head on over and check out Mr. Redlegs' post.
