Fish

I spent yesterday with friends from the Price Hill house church at a private pond. We said we would eat what we caught, and if we didn't catch anything we wouldn't eat. Also, anyone who wanted to eat had to participate in the catching and cleaning of the fish. Here are my thoughts on the day:
  • I used to think that those old 'competitive fishing' shows on ESPN were a joke. Seriously now, a sport? A worm on a hook is a sport? I think otherwise now. Of the 7 of us, 1 knew what he was doing, a couple kinda knew what they was doing, and I fell into the category that hadn't a clue. Thankfully, I caught a nice largemouth bass. But there's a whole lot more to it than I thought.

  • I wanted nothing to do with cleaning the fish. I watched for awhile before finally stepping up to the altar stone (we had no proper cutting surface, so we used a big rock). I had no idea what I was doing, but at least now I can say I've done it. And the first one I did was just about perfect. I had to be rescued during the 2nd one, though...

  • I was new to this. I had fished before, but it had been a long long long time, and I wasn't the one who ultimately killed/prepared the fish. I really wanted to do it, but was so hesitant... this is something I've wanted to do for a long time. I want Tobe to experience stuff like this. And now that I've done it... I must confess... the blood felt good on my hands I'm glad I have experienced it.

  • Does anything taste better than fresh fish? I mean really fresh fish? Wow, was it good. Cooked over a campfire, seasoned well... mmmmmmmmm...

  • All of this was good, but is there anything better than getting away from the busy life for a little while? We had no cell phone signal, no electricity, no running water... It was so refreshing.

  • Yes, in fact, there is something better. Spending the day with trustworthy friends.

Does the movie "City Slickers" come to mind? Every thing you said, I can relate to 100%. Didn't fish as a kid (maybe once or twice, 3 times max)....but while in my 20's and 30's, I went every year w/my brother and ole friends from the hood. Our annual trip to Daniel Boon National Forest. Right on the border of Tenessee and Kentucky! Can you say "Deliverence"!!! Rock Creek,...full of Rainbow Trout...thanks to the Game and Wildlife folks. And yes, we cleaned them right there on the bank and ate 'em around the camp fire. The Good Lord knows it don't get any better than that. Guys are just wired to go out,...kill something, drag it home and feed the family. Ya just got intouch with your manly side Scott..!! Guttin' a fish does suck though....you got to admitt!
