Softball

Remember how horribly, awfully, pathetically, embarassingly bad my softball team was last year? Remember how we didn't win a game in the summer session, even though we played a double-digit number of games? Remember how none of us could hit, none of us could field, and none of us had a frickin clue what we were doing? Remember how, when we finally (mercifully) won our first game, our first victory came against a team that played in gym shoes and didn't seem to know which hand the glove went on?

We have a bye in the first round of the playoffs. We're the 2nd seed of 6 teams. We play the 4-5 winner at 8:50 tonight. If we win at 8:50, we play for the championship at 10:00.

Being a part of a team that has actually won a few games has been a lot of fun. I get to spend Thursday evenings with my friends, and it's fun- even when we get our butts kicked.

Honestly, I don't give two craps what happens tonight*. Come on out and watch us have a good time. I'll be the guy on the right side of the field, muttering under my breath "please don't hit it to me, please don't hit it to me..."

(*My expectations are tempered. Now is the time when teams start picking up "better" players who shouldn't be in our league, as it is playoff time. That's how we lost in the playoffs in the spring- on a home run by a guy who very clearly was not a member of that team earlier in the season.)

your teams softball experiences have mirrored my own. we sucked our first year. a bunch of baseball players trying to play softball. we set the world record for routine flyballs in a single season, regularly gave up 30+ runs a game and won one game that season.
next year, we finished second in the same 12 team league.
and on the plus side for you, the third and fourth year we won the league.
so the sky's the limit, my friend. i hope your teams continues to mirror my own.
good luck.

ps- i played second and muttered the same things.

Right now it's 9:06 pm,.... I'd be heading for your game right now if you had noted where the hell you're playing......Is it 'Westside'?? outside Addyston?...just a notion.

Don't you guys have a major leaguer dude on your team?....A Milwaukee Brewer RHP stud?

Bottom line is, you are competing and having sweaty male, testosterone driven, comradery with your brethren. Swatting away mosquitoes, and blowing a hocker before you step into the batters box, on the grand stage of performance,.. between the White Lines. Good Lord Scott, it doesn't get much better than that.

And now the Boys of Summer lay weight 'til next summer. I hope your guys bring home the Gold.
