The Blender

I just thought of a fun story that I've been meaning to put up here. It's from a couple weeks ago. Some background info, just to help paint the picture:
  • Our roommate, Levon, regularly makes smoothies and protein shakes in the kitchen with a blender. The kitchen is at the bottom of the steps.
  • Robyn, Toby, and I read books in bed before Toby's bedtime. Our bedroom is at the top of the steps.
  • Toby does not differentiate between a musical "CD" or a video "DVD". He calls them both "CD", which is perfectly acceptable for a 2-year-old.
  • Weekly, Toby goes to the library for storytime with his Mommy. They usually check out a "new CD" to watch at some point during the week when Robyn needs a break. This might be the highlight of his week.
There's pretty much nothing that Tobe doesn't hear at this point, as seemingly all noises are fully investigated by our little elephant. (Even little elephants have big ears, right Frank?) Street noises, whether they be honking vehicle horns or people fighting (!), cats chasing each other, the washer/dryer/dishwasher, other people in the house... Tobe checks them all out.

We were laying in bed, reading some sort of fascinating children's literature, winding down from another fun day. Blender noise came up the stairs, and Toby wanted an explanation... "What that is, Mama?" Robyn said "Levon is making a smoothie". Fair enough, back to the book...

...except Tobe had a look of sheer terror on his face. What was wrong? Did he want a smoothie too? Did he know the fruit was tainted? Should I warn Levon not to take a sip? Very concerned, he said "Levon eat my new CD?"

Robyn and I couldn't figure it out. What could Levon having a smoothie have to do with a DVD? Then, Robyn got it. Toby thought she said "movie" instead of "smoothie".

All Toby was doing was trying to understand what Levon was doing. Naturally, Toby panicked when his mommy casually indicated Levon was going to blend and eat the new Winnie the Pooh movie. (Heck, I'd be terrified, too, especially if Levon was liquifying my Muppet Show DVDs.)

We shared a nice laugh, re-explained the situation, Levon enjoyed his smoothie, and we finished the high-quality children's literature. And no one was hurt.
