Tobe's first visit to the ballpark was much easier than his second visit was. 2 years ago, he pretty much spent the entire time sleeping on his Mommy. We were pretty sure this wasn't going to happen this time, as he only ever falls asleep in his bed or in his carseat. We planned on spending very little time watching baseball, and we were correct in planning in such a way.
We parked in the Fountain Square Garage and ate dinner at Potbelly. Tasty, quick, cheap eats. And the Square is really really really nice. Much better than it used to be. Then we walked down to the game. Tobe loves the horse-drawn carriages downtown. Maybe someday we should give that a shot.
The company seats, as always, were fantastic. I was able to enjoy them for less than half an inning before Toby wanted to escape. (Maybe he was pissed off at all the annoying Cub fans. I sure was.) He tried to go over me, he tried to go under me, and when both of those options failed, he laid down on the concrete ground. You know, the same concrete ground that has had billions of gallons of beer/soda/nachos/etc on it. We "forced" him to "enjoy" the seats for 2 innings before Robyn allowed him to go play in the playland.
And he most definitely enjoyed the playland. It's a nice playland. And there's no TV or radio near the play area for parents such as myself to keep up with what was happening in the game. I could hear the crowd noise, but there was significant cheering regardless of whether the play went in favor of the Reds or those stupid Young Bears. (I hate Cub fans. In case you couldn't tell. They are very obnoxious. Love the "Fook Yu #1" shirts, though. Those are fantastic. I wish the Reds had a player named 'Fukudome'.")
The playland was fantastic, and it was made even more fantastic with the static electricity generated by The Tobe repeatedly going down the plastic slide. His hair was everywhere, and that can never be a bad thing.
After 2 innings in the seats and 2 innings at the playland and concourse, it was time to head home. The kid needs his sleep, so we headed back toward Fountain Square. Toby got to ride on "Daddy's Head".
Before really leaving, we took a look at the Crosley Terrace statues. I encouraged Toby to get an up-close-and-personal look at them, as I think they are awesome. I tried to tell him what a legend Nuxy is in our city, but Tobe wasn't interested in listening. He was, unfortunately, interested in sucking Joe's bronzed left thumb. I'm not sure what to think about this.
He tried to grab onto Frank Robinson's bat, but he wasn't tall enough. Instead, he decided to hold Ernie Lombardi's hand. He's a sensitive little booger, isn't he? (Toby's sensitive... I can't speak for the sensitivity of the deceased Lombardi.)
Fountain Square is a lovely city center. It was a gorgeous night... clear blue skies, comfortable temperature... a good evening for some bootleg amateur photography, dontcha think?

living downtown has to be one of the coolest things in the world, especially since there is a lot of revitalizing going on. what they are doing with the square is simply amazing, especially when I played on a broomball league this past winter on the ice rink on the square.
maybe the suburbanites will eventually see that the city isn't all that bad. maybe....
how come you didn't get Mark Grace's autograph? dude was right next to you.
who still ownes a Mark Grace jersey?
send that pic to straight cash homie.
they did a bang-up job on the new fountain square. i just feel peaceful walking through there, sitting next to the Genius... it rules. plus free wifi! dang.
if you suck joe nuxhall's thumb, you get magical powers. what, you didn't know?
I can't wait to get Aidan down to the ole ball yard. Now if Toby was there for yesterdays nooner, he would have loved all the fire works going off. When Mike & Jeff were little, the bombs in the air were a great big ole wake me up. Cool pixs by the way.
