Espresso Withdrawal

A true coffee aficianado would say that I'm not there yet, but many folks would already call me a full-blown coffee snob.

I didn't drink coffee until college. I assume that's pretty normal. My caffeine intake has likely grown exponentially since age 19. The quantity of my coffee consumption has risen drastically as the years have passed.

Then, a few years ago, a dear friend introduced me to the wonders of the latte. He made me a mocha with chocolate milk and his new, fancy, espresso machine. *Epiphany!* As the months went by, I became a 2-shot guy... then I wanted that 3rd shot... I knew I was in trouble.

My autumn 2007 trip to Holland got me drinking espresso. Straight. No milk, no sugar. That first sip was harsh, but I was hooked before day's end.

I can't stomach the stuff here at work anymore. Gotta have dark roast for these inferior products to be reasonable. (I do drink it, though. I confess! I have to!)

Finally, in London last month, I bought myself this mighty fine stovetop espresso pot. It's such a glorious thing. From my first morning back stateside (Dec. 19) until yesterday (Jan. 4), I had at least 2 or 3 cups of espresso every morning to go along with my regular coffee and soda intake. Sometimes, I've had a cup or 3 at night, too. I can't help myself, I just like it too much.

This morning, I overslept and had to hurry out the door. By 9am, the headache was almost deadly. And no offense to the fine co-workers who like Folger's Breakfast Blend, but...

I'm in trouble :-(

(Sidenote: I have not yet gone to the extreme of obtaining and roasting my own beans, but don't count me out. If you do this, please let me know. I'm interested. And, quite possibly, obsessed.)

Coke + Dr. Pepper + Sugar Packet does well enough for me when i need it.

coffee and tea are both acquired tastes that i've never acquired. i've tried, but in the end it doesn't matter how much sugar, milk, cream, chocolate, whipped cream, cinnamon, etc. you put in there, when that last sip is gone the taste of coffee is still on my tongue.

and it lingers for hours.

and it. is. disgusting.

i will, however, drink beer, an acquired taste that some say causes the same reaction i have to coffee.
