Congrats go out to Joey Votto, Reds rookie first baseman, who was today named the runner up for the National League Rookie of the Year award. Hard to argue with Geovany Soto winning it, Soto being a catcher on a first-place team and all. Votto had a very strong rookie campaign. In addition to being impressive with the bat, he also received some votes for the Gold Glove, which is a bonus honor for the rook who wasn't supposed to be anything more than just ok in the field.
Not surprisingly, Votto's fellow rookie slugger, Jay Bruce, got some ROY votes as well, finishing 5th in the voting. Bruce was able to knock 21 balls out of the park, despite playing in just 108 games. He, too, showed some impressive glovework to go along with his ability to hit. These 2 young studs should be fixtures in the 3 and 4 holes in the lineup for years to come.
I've said it before, and I'll say it again... there is plenty of reason to be optimistic about the future of this franchise. There is a lot of promise in the infield, the outfield, the starting rotation, and the bullpen. And the farm system holds promise for years to come.
(Now, about that ROY voting... Bruce finished 5th, but he should have finished 4th. No sour grapes here, just reality. Bruce finished right behind his teammate, Edinson Volquez, who happens TO NOT BE A ROOKIE. Shame on the baseball writers. You'd think they'd have enough of a clue to know who is actually a rookie.)
